Six Reasons Why Being An Orientation Leader Is Worth It

By Alina Zerpa on June 24, 2016

As summer rolls around, every normal student is off traveling around the world, enjoying their vacation time. However, there’s a group of us who stay on campus and work tirelessly for months, usually in the summer, to create that special time for those who will be starting their first year at college.

Here are the top six reasons why being an Orientation Leader is the greatest decision in college.

6. There’s so much dancing: As exemplary role models for the institution, it is important to set expectations for incoming students. One of these expectations is that dancing is always required, especially if the Wobble comes on. I promise you won’t be the only one dancing, there’ll be others fleeing to your side to back it up with you too.

5. Professional pictures: There’s a flood on current student’s newsfeeds of pictures — head shots, to be specific. As an Orientation Leader, you get new snazzy LinkedIn pictures, something nice to send to mom and posted on every single social media platform so the world knows you ~kind of~ have your life together. It’s a great illusion and even you might fall for it — 10/10 would recommend.

4. Uniforms: For a few days, there’s no thinking about what to wear in the morning. Enjoy the fact that there is no sitting in front of the closet wondering what to wear – it’s already picked. Save the concern and inability to make a decision for lunch, which is 10 times more important. Plus, we all look bad in khakis so just get over it and have fun!

3. Administrators become your best friends: Spending so many hours together for days, weeks and months, it’s a little bit hard not to get close to those who work in your university’s Student Affairs department. First, it’ll be the exchange in numbers in case of an emergency, which then will turn into a simple text asking for help or something.

Eventually, either party might text something funny that happened and, although it won’t be a daily thing, you’ll feel comfortable reaching out to one of your superiors. One day, you all might even be Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat friends. In the long-run, you’ll not only really appreciate their work but you might even consider following a path into the Student Affairs world.

 2. Long-term gratification: It might not happen the day of orientation, a week later or even a year later. Whether you’re told or not, some freshman told their parents, friends, siblings and maybe even their dog all about orientation. Guess what? You might be the main character of that story and you don’t even know it.

To some family, you were the most helpful person on campus and it made their first-year student feel welcome and at home. To some new student, you were the point person and role model for the school. No pressure though, you might only be the first impression a family gets about the school.

1. Falling in love with your school: Over and over again, you’ll learn new things about your school, meet new people who have changed your perspective, and want to wear your school colors more than you did when you went through orientation. This love will continue as you start school and realize how incredibly lucky you are to set foot there.

This love will continue enough for you to apply again to continue with the program until you graduate. This love will grow when you realize it’s your last orientation. This love will last even past graduation and you’ll have orientation to thank.
